In November, 2012 locals attacked a private school named Farooqi Girls School at Karim Park, Shafiqabad, following alleged blasphemous wording in a question paper. Different versions regarding various aspects of the attack on the private school and its burning in the Karim Park area of Ravi Road had appeared. The school was burnt by enraged people as they protested against distribution of alleged blasphemy material by a teacher among the students.
An FIR had also registered against the owner of the school and a female teacher under Section 295-C. According to details, the class-6 students were given an assignment “The Holy Quran” before Eid holidays which allegedly contained some blasphemous words in the last line. The paper was handwritten and did not bear name of the school. Neither the school owner nor the female teacher was available for comments.
There were rumors about the assignment, which allegedly contained blasphemous words, distributed among the students. A version says that the blasphemous assignment was prepared mistakenly by the teacher as she unintentionally mixed some lines from another page of the book from where she was preparing the assignment. It was claimed that the teacher had formally apologized and subsequently the school owner, Asim Farooqi, fired her from the school following which the local clerics were also pacified. After all this, a large number of people gathered outside the school as the news of the alleged blasphemy spread among the locals. They demanded death penalty for the owner of the school and the teacher and kept chanting slogans.
However, later the situation went out of control and enraged people entered the school building and damaging the campus property and also set ablaze a car parked inside the campus. They also damaged other nearby branches of the school.
It was learnt that the students of the school were conveyed through phone the message of a day-off in anticipation of any untoward incident.
Officials from the office of the EDO Education, Lahore, also visited the school and tried to talk to the management/owner of the school but to no avail as nobody was available except the protesters.
An official, seeking anonymity, said the situation would be clear only after thorough investigation. He said since the paper did not bear name of the school, its authenticity was questionable.
One person was injured during the protest and subsequent scuffle between the protesters and police who was provided with medical treatment.
According to Rescue 1122 officials, firefighting was underway till the filing of this report.
Operations SP Multan Khan said an FIR had been registered against Asim Farooqi and others on the complaint of Abdullah. The news.
